Statue of Liberty Museum

We broke ground for the Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, a project of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SOLEIF) working in partnership with the National ParkService, on October 6, 2016.

Phelps Construction Group was selected by the Foundation as the construction manager during the early stages of the project and has played a vital role in the design development, working alongside the architect, FXFOWLE, in determining how to construct the museum most efficiently on the Island. This sustainable building will be constructed with a first floor above the 500-year flood level and will be able to withstand hurricane force winds, which in the past have severely damaged both Liberty and Ellis Island. The exterior of the museum will feature an expansive green roof which will include vegetation native to the Island. The interior of the museum will feature exhibits created by ESI Design including an immersive theater, engagement gallery and an inspiration gallery. Additionally, the museum will house the original Statue of Liberty torch, which Phelps Construction Group will be moving from its current location in the Statue’s base to the new museum.

When complete, the museum will give millions of visitors the opportunity to learn about the Statue of Liberty’s history, influence, and legacy through interactive displays and artifacts including the Statue’s original torch. The 26,000 square foot museum is expected to be completed in 2019.

Additionally, the classrooms have been completed with all the latest technology.

The innovative design of the school, incorporated two two-story bridge trusses over the two story gymnasium which supports the additional floors above.  The new gymnasium and athletic field is utilized by the students and the members of the community which have been granted access during non-school hours. Moreover, the Littleton Avenue school has become a focal attraction to both the students and the community.

KIPP:NJ BOLD Academy

NEWARK, NJ – This existing 124,107 SF building sits on 2.2 acres at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Elizabeth Street. The original structure was built in 1876 and later renovated in 1923. Until the end of the 2012 school year, the building was in use by the Newark Public School System.

The future tenant, TEAM Academy Charter Schools currently has five schools on five campuses in Newark serving students in grades Kindergarten through 12th.

We were brought on board by the Friends of TEAM Academy in the Pre-Construction Phase of this project in order to provide a comprehensive budget, constructability review and value engineering. We have also been selected as the General Contractor to historically restore the facade and historically preserve the “historic fabric” of the school.

When complete the building will accommodate one elementary school and one middle school with an expected student population of 1,000.

The Peopling of America® Center

Phelps Construction Group has been chosen by The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. to work with them to complete the construction of The Peopling of America® Center at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The Peopling of America® Center will expand upon the Ellis Island years of immigration to include the entire panorama of the American experience. How we became Americans, how we made and are still making the journey here, how we created and continue to influence our communities, and how this nation looks forward to building for the future.

The first phase entailed the renovation of a portion of the museum and the necessary hazardous material, environmental cleanup and demolition work required for the completion of the new offices for the National Park Service in order to make room for the new museum. Working with The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and the National Park Service, Phelps Construction Group performed the pre-construction, including the evaluation of the Historical impact of the project on Ellis Island, construction logistics, scheduling and budgeting for the project.

Phase I of the museum project was completed in October 2011, welcoming tourists to discover immigration from the Colonial Era, approximately 1550 until 1890, when Ellis Island originally opened. Interactive exhibits and presentations tell stories of the journey to America and efforts to build our nation. The Flag of Faces, an interactive photo montage, has also been unveiled featuring pictures of families, past and present, that share the experience of being a proud American citizen.

Ellis Island was closed in October 2012 after Hurricane Sandy. Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy on Ellis Island, Phelps Construction has became involved in the clean up and restoration of the MEP infrastructure to the Island, performing Logistic Planning, Scheduling and budgeting for both The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and the National Park Service. Phelps Construction Group was instrumental in the efforts to restore Ellis Island and complete Phase II of the museum project.

Save Ellis Island

ELLIS ISLAND, NY/NJ - We are currently renovating the 2nd Floor Offices in the Laundry / Hospital Outbuilding for Save Ellis Island. The Laundry/Hospital Outbuilding is architecturally significant.  Constructed of red brick with projecting quoins and limestone trim, the Hospital Outbuilding was designed to echo elements of the main hospital building on Island 2 and the main immigration building on Island 1.  It is also significant as part of the first major integrated hospital of the twentieth century and for its role in the early years of the U.S. Public Health Service.  Its greater significance, however, is due to its place in the history of Ellis Island.  Between 1892 and 1954, Ellis Island served as the gateway to America for twelve million new immigrants - over 1.2 million of which were treated in the Ellis Island hospital complex.  Today, over forty percent of all Americans and half of all New Jersey residents can trace at least one ancestor to Ellis Island, and it is one of the country’s most popular destinations, with nearly two million visitors each year. For more information on the rehabilitation of the Laundry Hospital Outbuilding or the Ellis Island Hospital Complex visit www.saveellisisland.org
