NEWARK, NJ – Phelps Construction Group was incredibly proud to participate in the revitalization of the City of Newark, NJ. One of the nation’s major air, shipping, and rail hubs, Newark is now home to ‘Teachers Village at Four Corners’ -a major urban renewal project housing charter schools, apartments for educators and a new retail corridor. Phelps was awarded the first project, ‘Building Two’, a four-story 104,000 SF charter school building with first floor retail space in 2011. We broke ground for the project in February 2012 and completed the project in June 2013. TEAM Academy and Discovery Charter School currently occupy the building along with six retail stores.
The second project of Teachers Village at Four Corners’ , ‘Building Five’, is a five-story, 40,000 SF charter school with five retail spaces. ‘Building Five’ currently houses the Great Oaks Academy and the Chen School daycare which along with ‘Building Two’serves about 800 students from kindergarten through eighth grade and 150 children in daycare. The remaining six buildings will have 224 housing units to accommodate teachers and almost 20 additional retail spaces. This project is part of Newark’s greater plan to revitalize the city by bringing in new businesses along with 224 housing units to accommodate teachers in an effort to further improve area schools.
